DO-over

I'm thinking about redoing my bedroom with some new paint and bedding and such. It won't really be a whole makeover, just more of a do-over. I got the idea from a lady that blogs about her experiences after her husband died, and she needed to make a space in the house that was "hers". And I'm not trying to wipe away "our" room, I just want to freshen it up a bit and make it more of a peaceful sanctuary than the hidey-hole it has become.

I am going with the whole Mr. Big paint one accent wall thing, and then redoing my bed linens, adding new lamps, etc. I'm keeping the artwork as it was special to both of us. Alot of it is Asian / Buddhist influenced , as you may know I grew up in Singapore and I was always into the whole zen idea. There are also a few personal pieces and reminders of Missisippi that I will be keeping in there. I am also changing the ceiling fan out and putting a dimmer switch on all of the flushed lighting.

This is what it looks like now...kinda blah.....and bright as all hades....

I hope to get some sleepy darkness in there as I don't like to sleep in a sunroom, but we'll see how I can do it without hanging black blankets from my windows.....so stay tuned as I give myself another reason to be crazy in Alabama....

Geez! You're all handy and shit! I wish I was as handy as you! If I bring the wine, can I come "help"? I can't wait to see what it's going to look like. I think it's a great idea! Good luck, hon!

Two words: Color pallette!

If you want a warm, Zen/ Asian themed bedroom, you can choose deep reds, dark purples and touches of gold. All rich, all calming, within a theme of calm and rest (which is what a bedroom should be). A peaceful santuary (sp?).

Then, yes! Touches of your life from Mississippi and artwork important to you.

look around, check this site out:

Make this space your own. Take your power back as your re do the place you spend 8 hours a day.

Create a place befitting a warrior woman!

It is rather "blah", Kim. Definitely needs some color. Get some small cans of paint so you can put it on the wall to actually see what it would look like it your room. Paint chips don't work.

I can see what you mean about bright -- those blinds don't keep out much light. But you definitely don't want black drapes -- way too heavy for your personality.

Sounds like a great idea Cozzie-a "new" beginning for your sanctuary so to speak. Have you considered room-darkening shades/blinds? That way you can easily control the amount of light you want in the room. Good luck and looking forward to seeing the results. ((HUGS))

Kim, take your color inspiration from the artwork over the bed.

Then pop in a little red, and maybe, some bamboo green for bright spots.

Best color ever (I am a broken record with this but it's so true!): Halcyon Green (Sherwin Williams), which is really a complete gray - blue - green. It is gorgeous.
However, for your room and preferred artwork, I'd go with a nice soothing orangey red for the accent wall.

You can buy curtains that have a special "black out" fabric on them - my mom used them in her room when my dad worked nights so that he could sleep during the day. They blocked out the sun very well.
